St John's KS2 ECO Council Tree Planting Session

Yesterday St John's KS2 ECO Council had a very special meeting in school with Kara (a Blackpool Park Ranger) and Nathan (from Active Blackpool)

During the first session we found out about climate change and as an ECO Council we need to spread the word and encourage others,

"Climate Change Needs Behaviour Change"

As a group we discussed ways in which people can reduce their carbon emissions. This included: walking rather than travelling in the car, switching off lights to reduce electricity use, put a jumper on when you are feeling cold and turn the heating down, close windows and doors in the colder months to keep the cold out and use less plastic.

We then talked about examples of 'environmental sustainability' at St John's and how the new KS2 Eco Council have already started to make some changes in our school environment.

So far, KS2 Eco Council have:

-Planted bulbs outside in the school grounds

-Monitoring the use of electricity and doing 'spot checks' around the school to check electrical equipment is switched off

-Encouraging children and staff to add waste to our compost bin

-Encouraging more children to walk to school

We then went outside to plant some new trees with Kara. We planted silver birch and rowan trees. We promised Kara we will visit the area as often as we can to check on the new trees.
