Year 6 - Victorian visit to Quarry Bank Mill - Monday 30th September 2024

On Monday 30th September, as part of the Year 6 curriculum topic on Children’s jobs during the Victorian times, we will be taking the class to Quarry Bank Mill in Wilmslow, near Manchester Airport.  During the visit children will be given the opportunity to explore local history, the Industrial Revolution, and discover what it was like to be a factory worker or child apprentice.  They will see how cloth was made and how water and steam would be used to drive machinery.  The mill contains working machinery and demonstrations of traditional skills.  Y6 will also visit the Apprentice House, which was home to the pauper children who worked in the mill; the Apprentice House is a recreated ‘home’ where students can experience life in the past, from a strict lesson in the schoolroom, to seeing the grisly medical treatments of the day.

Children must be in school early at 8.30am, as the mini-buses will be leaving at 8.45am. Our first session is booked for 10.15am. We will not be leaving Quarry Bank Mill until 2.30pm, therefore we will not return to school until at least 4.00pm traffic permitting.  Uniform must be worn; a waterproof coat is advised.

Packed lunches will be provided by the school kitchen for children entitled to free school meals only, all other pupils will need to bring their own packed lunch, in a plastic box. Please give children any travel sickness medication before leaving, and hand a return dosage in a named envelope for the return journey.

We are asking for a donation of £6.00 towards the cost of the trip.

Please could we ask parents to return the permission slip and payment to school by Friday 27th September.
