St John's Achieve Eco Schools Green Flag Award

A huge well done to our St John's KS2 Eco Council who have been successful in meeting the requirements for the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award.

Please read the positive comments from Eco-Schools:

This year you have built a strong Eco-Committee of 12 students who are supported by 2 members of staff. These children were selected by teachers after reading their application forms. It was fascinating to learn that you have a waiting list of KS2 people who want to join the committee.

Putting the committee into smaller groups to complete different parts of the Environmental Review was a good idea allowing them to take ownership and giving everyone a voice. We loved reading that completing it had provided you with some inspiration! We especially enjoyed reading your insightful ideas and thoughts within each section, for example organising a United Utilities assembly and writing to your local Blackpool MP about an issue. On top of this, your Eco-Council also identified areas where your school is already performing well and this must have been very heartening! Sharing your findings (good and bad) with your leadership team and other staff members is a great way of increasing buy-in for your environmental actions and kicking off a whole school movement.

With the Environmental Review to hand the committee decided what topics were priorities for the school, and what was achievable for families. Thinking about the wider community at this point is admirable. You have provided a variety of links that cover subject matter and age group which demonstrated that environmental issues are being taken seriously and are being used to enhance the learning experience within your school. Y3 linked their science topic of plants to biodiversity. This included planting, observing, and recording the weather as the plants grew.

The whole school assemblies that the children deliver are an excellent medium for sharing work. We recognise that it can be hard to stand up and deliver an assembly to peers and parents so well done to everyone who has taken part. The letters, activity booklets, and information leaflets were a fantastic way to involve parents to continue the learning at home. Your Eco-Board is attractive. The committee is working hard so showcase their work and achievements.  Raising awareness of the Eco-Committee, their work, and creating a collaborative atmosphere has been your success story this year. We love how your Eco-Code demonstrates that the children are at the heart of environmental action in your school.

We would like to thank you for your hard work this year and congratulate you on achieving an Eco-Schools Green Flag.
