Home Learning Expectations

In Class 6, we encourage you to read as often as possible (minimum of 3x per week) and to develop a love of reading as this will help you to build a strong foundation for learning when you go to secondary school and for later life. Year 6 is the year to push the boundaries with reading and so we’ll encourage you to engage with new authors, read new genres, and explore different text-types (novels, comics, diaries, newspapers, websites).
We kindly ask adults at home to continue to encourage regular reading.

You need to keep your indoor kit in school and bring your outdoor kit with you in a bag on a Thursday.

Year 6 - Manchester Imperial War Museum -  11th December 2024

As part of this terms’ topic covering World War I we will be visiting the Imperial War Museum in Manchester on Wednesday 11th December. Whilst we are at the museum the children will have the opportunity to take part in an interactive session. This session will investigate Remembrance and include personal stories from the First World War up to today.
The trip will take place during school time and children need to be in school at normal time. School uniform must be worn. We will be back after normal home time, approximately 4.00pm.

HALF-TERMLY FIELD STUDY VISIT: STANAH COUNTRY PARK (21.11.24)

We revisited Stanah for our second science field study visit of the year. We observed some of the seasonal changes and compared with our visit last half term, looking for signs of winter. We compared the changes in temperature and the weather. We also collected leaves, berries and twigs.

LANCASHIRE FIRE AND RESCUE VISIT: ROAD SENSE TALK  (19.11.24)

We were visited by Green Watch from Blackpool Fire Station who came in to deliver a Road Sense session. The session was focused around how to travel safely, routes and the modes of transport we use. We talked about the importance of wearing and seat belt, pedestrian safety, safe cycling and being safe and being seen.

POET VISIT BY KATE WAKELING  (19.11.24)

We were visited by poet and author Kate Wakeling who came to lead a workshop. She shared some of her own works with us, including her poem 'Some Other Names for Rain'. We then had a go at working creatively to create our own kenning poems which some of us then performed.

MICHAEL ROSEN PERFORMANCE: THE CHILDREN'S BOOKSHOW (18.11.24)

We visited Blackpool Grand Theatre to see famous poet and novelist, Michael Rosen, perform a number of his poems and short stories as part of 'The Children's Bookshow'. We had an absolute blast and came away from the show with a copy of his new book: 'Michael Rosen's Big Book of Bad Things' which we've all nose-dived into already!

CHILDREN IN NEED (15.11.24)

We helped raise money for BBC Children in Need by taking part in a non-uniform day and decorating a giant Pudsey with silver coin donations! As a school, we raised in excess of £360 in support of the charity!

KNIFE CRIME TALK (15.11.24)

As part of Operation Sceptre, PCSO's from Blackpool Central Neighbourhood Policing Team visited us to talk about knife crime - the issues around it and the laws relating to knife crime in the UK. Thank you so much to our local PCSO's for leading the session - we learnt a lot!

VISIT TO BLACKPOOL WAR MEMORIAL AND CENOTAPH (13.11.24)

Following Remembrance Sunday, we visited Blackpool Cenotaph as part of our learning about World War One. Prior to our visit, we researched some of the people on the Blackpool Roll of Honour to find out more about Blackpool's local heroes. When we visited the memorial, we searched for the names of the ex-servicemen and women we had studied.

UCLAN WORKSHOP: ELECTRIFYING EXPERIMENTS (6.11.24)

We visited Uclan's Young Scientist Centre for an 'Electrifying Experiments Workshop where we learned all about electricity. SCIENCE - INVESTIGATING MOULD GROWTH

As part of our learning about micro-organisms in Science, we carried out an investigation to explore the rate of the growth of mould on bread. We kept the bread in different locations around school, focusing on the different temperatures in each area. We observed the bread every few days and recorded our observations over period of time. Below are some photos from the end of our investigation period.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH

As part of Black History Month, we have been learning about Walter Tull: an English professional footballer and British Army officer who fought during WW1. As part of a Whole School Worship for BHM, we fed back to the other classes about our learning, and shared a poem we wrote in memory of Walter.

WALTER TULL

Warrior on the field, with skill and grace
Although he faced prejudice, he stood in his place.
Legendary footballer, his talent so bright,
The first Black officer, to lead white in the fight.
Every brave moment, he courageously soared,
Remembered in history, his bravery adored.

Thriving despite barriers, he broke every chain,
Understanding equality, he fought through the pain.
Love for his country inspired many to see,
Leaving a legacy, he shaped history's plea.

HALF TERMLY BLACKPOOL CENTRAL LIBRARY VISIT (31.10.24)

We thoroughly enjoyed our first of this years' visits to Blackpool Central Library. One of the librarians shared with us the story 'Hyde and Squeak' by Fiona Ross. We then had the opportunity to choose our first library book of the year!

CLASS 6 - WHOLE SCHOOL WORSHIP (11.10.24)

We led the whole school in Friday Worship. We talked about the Trinity: the Christian concept of God. This is something we have been learning about in R.E so we wanted to share our learning with the other children in school.

VICTORIAN VISIT TO QUARRY BANK MILL (30.09.24)

As part of our history topic about the Victorians this half-term, we visited Quarry Bank Mill in Styal near Manchester.

We lived as a mill apprentice for the day! This included trying the different jobs in the mill the apprentices used to do. We found the children's jobs tiring and boring...We also enjoyed dressing up as a rich Victorian and finding out what daily life was like working in the mill and living in the apprentice house.
