Teaching Reading at Our School

Reading is an essential skill, which allows us to access many areas of everyday life, and a skill that many take for granted. For children, being able to read competently and confidently not only enables them to discover new information during their school lives, but also opens them up to a world of new ideas, stories and opportunities. Being able to read well is important for all children, whatever their background, and every child deserves the chance to become a reader.

At our school, we are passionate about fostering a lifelong love of reading. In EYFS and KS1, we use the structured Phonics Bug Club programme to develop strong phonics skills, ensuring children build a solid foundation for reading fluency and comprehension. Alongside this, we have placed a strong emphasis on reading for pleasure, creating an environment where children are excited to explore books. Our engaging reading areas and regular story sessions encourage pupils to discover the joy of reading while broadening their vocabulary and imagination.

High Quality Class Texts

We value the importance of exposing our children to a wealth of books that intrigue and excite. Therefore, we have carefully selected books that represent different abilities, cultures, beliefs, appropriate age content as well as offering challenge to readers in all year groups in both poetry, fiction and non-fiction alike. By offering a whole school diverse reading curriculum, we ensure that we are supporting all our children in finding books by a wide range of authors, that they can read and connect with on some level while affirming their own cultural identities and hopefully developing important, positive insights about others.

The class texts have all been chosen for their high quality and promise to excite a range of readers. The fact that the class teacher is reading it to children means that even the lowest 20% of each class is whisked away and immersed in the stories between the pages. We also link our writing units to the class texts so all of the children have a clear purpose for their writing.
