Phonics, Spelling and Reading schemes at St Johns
Phonics and Spelling
From Reception to Year 2 we use BUG CLUB PHONICS in all three classes.
At the end of Year 1, all children (unless identified) take a Phonics Screening Test.
Spelling shed is used from Years 2-6 to help children understand the history of spelling and the English language and to give children a range of different strategies, approaches and activities to help improve and practise spelling rules.
Reading
Children across the school have access to a large range of books in class and to take home for their home reader. We expect all of our children to read at least three times a week at home.
We have bought a wide-selection of fiction and non-fiction books from the following providers, so that the children experience a broad and balanced reading curriculum:
- Oxford Reading Tree (Fireflies, Snapdragons, Traditional Tales, All Stars, Treetops, Floppy Phonics)
- Collins Big Cat
- Project X
- Rigby Star
- Dandelion Readers
- Wellington Square
- Phonics Bug
- Bug Club
Supporting your child with reading at home:
Reception and KS1 parents-to support you with reading with your child at home St John's staff have created short videos to help you. All of the videos have been shared on Tapestry. If you need help accessing Tapestry please speak to Mrs Zinna or ask at the school office.
Thank you.
