Phonics, Spelling and Reading schemes at St Johns

Phonics and Spelling

From Reception to Year 2 we use BUG CLUB PHONICS in all three classes.

At the end of Year 1, all children (unless identified) take a Phonics Screening Test.

Spelling shed is used from Years 3-6 to help children understand the history of spelling and the English language and to give children a range of different strategies, approaches and activities to help improve and practise spelling.

Additional resources and ways to support at home can be found in the ‘Phonics and Spelling’ section of this site.

Reading

Children across the school have access to a large range of books in class and to take home for their home reader. We have bought a wide-selection of fiction and non-fiction books from the following providers, so that the children experience a broad and balanced reading curriculum:

  • Oxford Reading Tree (Fireflies, Snapdragons, Traditional Tales, All Stars, Treetops, Floppy Phonics)
  • Collins Big Cat
  • Project X
  • Rigby Star
  • Dandelion Readers
  • Wellington Square
  • Phonics Bug
  • Bug Club

Additional resources and ways to support at home can be found in the ‘Reading’ section of this site.
