PSHE – Personal, social, health and economic Education at St John’s is Life Skills

At St John’s we recognise the importance of high quality PSHE education and believe that the subject has a direct effect on our children’s academic achievement. The DFE report states that ‘The evidence shows that personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education can improve the physical and psychosocial well-being of pupils. A virtuous cycle can be achieved, whereby pupils with better health and well-being can achieve better academically, which in turn leads to greater success’.
Our Life Skills curriculum strives to empower pupils with essential life skills, from emotional well-being and social skills to health education, staying safe and relationship education. Our curriculum is designed to help our children stay healthy, safe and prepared for life – and work – in modern Britain.

We use the scheme of work SCARF (SCARF stands for Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience and Friendship), designed by Corum education. SCARF is a whole-school approach to promoting behaviour, safety, achievement and wellbeing. It promotes positive behaviour, mental health, wellbeing, resilience and achievement and covers the Relationships Education and Health Education statutory requirements. SCARF supports great learning every day not just through its Life skills lessons but by actively promoting and exploring our school values of: love, kindness, honesty, friendship and forgiveness.
All our lessons follow the SCARF code where we focus upon warm relationships of mutual respect and tolerance in a calm and purposeful atmosphere for learning. Within our Life skills curriculum we also place an importance on the mental health and well-being of our children. We have recently incorporated a scheme of work called ’Happy Minds’ from the NHS from reception to Year 6. This weekly program teaches techniques to manage stress and encourages our children to apply these strategies when faced with difficult situations independently, both at home and at school.
