GEOGRAPHY AT ST JOHN'S
Geography is taught in all year groups at St John’s. Throughout the subject, the children gain insights into different places, cultures and environments. Geography can help children grasp not only the physical features of the world but also how people interact with their surroundings, fostering empathy and global awareness.

EYFS
The EYFS early learning goals aim to give children an awareness of their physical world and their community by exploring, observing and investigating people and places around them.

Key Stage 1
In KS1, children begin to develop their geographical vocabulary bylearning about our local area, and a small contrasting area in a non- European country (China Sichuan Province, Chengdu).

The children learn about weather patterns within hot and cold places in the world and also measure the weather in our local area. Children use maps,
atlases, globes and are introduced to digital maps (Digimap).

KS1 children all take part in fieldwork where they develop map skills (including compass points), observational skills and begin to interpret data.

Key Stage 2
In KS2, our geography irresistible curriculum aims to build upon and expand previous knowledge.

The KS2 geography curriculum has three main focus areas including:

*locational knowledge,

*place knowledge

*human and physical geography.

Locational knowledge includes deepening the children's knowledge of the UK’s countries, cities and exploring the human and physical characteristics. Children examine the latitude, longitude and time zones. They use maps including digital versions (Digimap) to focus on Europe, North and South America and their regions, characteristics, countries or cities.

When looking at place knowledge, children investigate and research the similarities and differences of a region of the UK with a region in a European country (Almaria in Spain) and within a region in North  America (Yellowstone)

Children are taught to describe and understand key aspects of human and physical geography. This includes: climate zones, types of settlements, the water cycle, economic activity, rivers, mountains, volcanoes and earthquakes.

Geography Visits
St John’s geography curriculum is enriched by an array of educational visits including: Fleetwood, Trawden, Cuerden Valley, Windermere and many areas within Blackpool and Lancashire.
