Computing at St John's

Computing is one of the core curriculum subjects in our school curriculum.

At St. John’s Primary School, we recognise the integral part that technology plays in our children’s lives. We want our pupils to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly, and to engage with the ever-changing world as responsible digital citizens now and in the future. We aim to encourage our pupils to be creators, and our curriculum - which encompasses computer science, information technology and digital literacy - reflects this. We want our pupils to understand that with technology comes choices. As a school, we want to model and support these positive choices.
We encourage staff to try and embed computing across the whole curriculum to make learning creative and accessible for all children. We want children to become fluent with a range of tools to best express their understanding and to feel comfortable and confident with using and exploring these tools independently.

Our Computing Curriculum

At St. John’s, we follow the Teach Computing curriculum which has been devised by experts from the National Centre for Computing Education in conjunction with the DfE. The Computing Curriculum is designed to provide children with skills and knowledge across a broad and varied spectrum of topics, encompassing the three strands of Computing: Information Technology, Digital Literacy and Computer Science.
Computing is not just taught in stand-alone weekly Computing lessons but also integrated into other areas of the curriculum, including English, History, Geography, Life Skills, Art, and Design Technology.

Online Safety

A key part of our computing curriculum is ensuring that children are accessing technology safely and responsibly. Our children develop their awareness and responsibility of keeping safe online through the use of the ‘Project Evolve – Education for a Connected World’ framework. Through Project Evolve lessons, children are provided with regular opportunities for discussion and presented with scenarios and questions that give them the vital information they need to navigate the online world and also challenge any misconceptions they may have.
Online-safety is taught half-termly in each class from Reception though to Year 6.
