Hello year 4, I hope you are all well.
Our last 2 science lessons this half term were about food chains. Have a look at the links below, watch the videos and have a go at some of the activities.
You could create a food chain mobile or food chain puppets. Why not draw a food chain in your exercise book or challenge yourself and draw a food web!

Hello Class 4,
Hope you are all keeping well. I was so glad to find out that we can keep in touch through class blogs, it's really important that in these strange times we keep communicating with each other. Isn't it exciting to know that we are making history? We should ask Mrs Galloway if we can add this to the history timeline on the stairs. ????.
What have you all been up to? I have been helping my children with their school work and taking our dog, Luna, to the beach every afternoon for an hour. She has never had so much exercise (neither have I ????).
Hey Dennis that book you helped me choose from the library about food for birds has been really useful, I've made some fat balls out of lard and sunflower seeds.
Keep safe guys, really miss you I can't wait to hear what you've all been up to ????

5 April 2020
Good Morning everyone,
Well it's Palm Sunday today, as you know, this is the day that Jesus went to Jerusalem on a donkey and people were so happy to see him they lay long leaves in his path and realised that he was King of the Lord.
Usually I would be at church, walking around the streets with all the congregation, being led by a donkey to symbolise Jesus's procession.
Did you know that every donkey has a cross on their back? Many people believe this is a sign from God.
Anyway today I can't go to church, instead I have hung some green leaves on my front door to remind people what a special day it is today.
By the way, I didn't realise that emojis turned into question marks on these blogs, I'm even beginning to miss emojis (I'd have put a laughing one here if I could !) xx
Mrs Firminger
5 April 2020
Hello Class 4
I hope you have all had a lovely Sunday. If you are missing church check out their Facebook page. Reverend Steve is recording services and there are videos of Lauren doing story and singing sessions.
I have been out in the garden reading my book and watching the hundreds of tadpoles that have hatched in my pond! I’ll ask Miss Johnston if she can put a photo on here for you to see.
I would love to hear what you have all been getting up to, let me know. How is home learning going?
Well, next week we would have been performing our Passion Play in church. I know how much you were enjoying the songs so I’ve put links to 2 of them below so you can have a sing a long at home.

17 April 2020
Hello year 4
Hope you are all doing well.
In science we would have been learning about states of matter and doing lots of exciting investigations.
If you have a look on the websites there are some investigations you can do at home.
https://momforallseasons.com/states-of-matter-science-experiments-for-kids/
https://lifestyle.howstuffworks.com/crafts/science-projects/science-projects-for-kids-states-of-matter.htm
Take some photos of your experiments and email them to go on the website - it would be great to see how you get on.
I've found a quiz about the Pendle Witches, why not give it a go - you might have to research some of the answers. Maybe you could have a go at writing your own quiz and posting it on here for others to have a go at answering.
Annabel - thank you so much for the letter, it really brightened my day :)
Take care everyone and see you all soon I hope x

Hello everyone
Hope you are all well.
Tomorrow the country will be celebrating VE day, when we remember the surrender of Germany and the ending of World War 2.
Here's a short video clip explaining what its all about.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/history-ks2-ve-day/z7xtmfr
Why don't you base tomorrow's home learning on VE day? Here's some ideas:
- make some bunting to hang in your windows. There's some here you can print and colour. https://www.bakerross.co.uk/craft-ideas/teachers/ve-day-anniversary-colour-in-bunting/
- do some baking - Union Jack cookies or cupcakes - it would be great to see a picture of them!
- find some facts and post them on here or write a quiz on here that we can have a o at answering.
- write a newspaper report to explain what happened on VE day.
- watch the Pathe newsclip https://www.britishpathe.com/video/ve-day-celebrations Can you make your own news clip?
- Have a go at code cracking and Morse Code
Don't forget to send some photos so they can go on the school website.
Take care xx

Morning year 4
I hope you are all well.
This week in maths we would be looking at money. Adding up coins to find different amounts, writing money using decimal notation (pounds and pence e.g. 357p = £3.57) and comparing different amounts of money using < > = e.g. £4.05 < £4.50
Please practice doing this at home, if possible using real money!
There are also some activities you can use online or print off to practice.

Wow, this is our 9th week of Lockdown!!! Considering we haven't been doing very much I think the time has passed quickly, do you? I am at school today, it feels really strange without you guys here, I can't wait to see you all again. Have you been on BBC bitesize? I think its awesome, my son uses it a lot and I must confess i've been polishing up on my SPAG and maths! My son has had to do World War 2 project and as part of it we had a VE Day party and made some scarecrows to sit in the garden, they made people laugh who were walking past and we got on the local News on TV too which was incredibly exciting!! We are still writing our diary and saving keepsakes of Lockdown to remember this surreal time. You are all going to receive a letter from your teachers soon , maybe you'll keep it as a momento? Well I had better get on with my work, hope you are all well and happy and I very much look forward to seeing you soon. In the meantime keep safe and carry on being kind to everyone and yourselves. xx

Morning year 4
Lets have a go at some science - states of matter - back on the 17th April I posted some links to science investigations you could have a go at at home, I hope you've had fun trying some out.
This week I'd like you to have a look at the 3 states of water, as a solid, as a liquid and as a gas. Watch this video first. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuE1LePDZ4Y
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zkgg87h/articles/z9ck9qt
http://www.planet-science.com/categories/under-11s/chemistry-chaos/2012/10/is-water-a-liquid,-solid-gas.aspx
- you could make some ice lollies
- fill some balloons with water and put them in the freezer. When they have frozen peel off the balloon and observe the ice. How long do they take to melt back into water?
- when an adult boils a kettle observe the steam. Ask an adult (not you!) to hold a plate above the steam - what do you notice happening?
- find out about the water cycle. You could create your own mini water cycle in a jar or bowl. There are lots of instructions online. Here is one from the met office that you could do.
https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/learn-about/met-office-for-schools/other-content/other-resources/experiments/water-cycle
It would be great to see some photographs of your water cycles - remember to email them to school for the website.

Hello Year 4
I hope you are all enjoying half term and the beautiful weather.
I've found some great activities you could try outside in the sunshine this week.
1. Make some new crayons! Cover a paper plate with tin foil. Find some old crayons and break them up into small pieces. Put cookie cutters on the plate and fill with the broken crayons. Leave out in the sun, the crayons will melt and fill the cookie cutters. Let them cool and remove from the cookie cutters and yo have new crayons! Here's a link.
https://www.notimeforflashcards.com/2009/07/melting-crayons.html
2.Make sun catchers, there are some ideas on this site for different ways of doing this.
https://artfulparent.com/stained-glass-suncatcher-ideas-kids/
3.Go on a rainbow scavenger hunt, can you find natural objects for all the colours of the rainbow? You could glue them into a rainbow shape.
4. Make bird feeders, remember how we made them at forest school? Cut an orange in half and scoop out the flesh. Mix bird seed and lard together and pack the half oranges. Hang from a tree/fence.
5. Draw shadow creatures. Find or make an interesting shadow. Draw round the outside of it. Add features e.g. eyes, scales, legs to turn it into an amazing creature!
Remember to send some photos to school for the website.
Hi Joshua, lovely to hear from you. I'm glad you are enjoying doing your work at home and working hard. Remember to use full sentences when you are answering the reading questions!
Hi Tobias, I'm not sure what the sumdog code is. If you email school I'm sure Miss Johnston will let you know it.
Stay safe in the sun everyone - remember to wear sun cream and to drink lots of water!
Annabel
2 June 2020

Hello Class 4
Well, tomorrow sees the start of our final half term before the summer holidays. It will be another strange one for us all. I am back in school full time teaching the keyworker children bubble and really looking forward to catching up with everyone - especially the year 4 children :o)
Monday is World Ocean Day, the perfect day for us to celebrate following on from our learning about plastic pollution. Have a look at this website, there are videos for you to watch and activities to have a go at
https://worldoceanday.school/
This week's maths is all about using the inverse to check answers to addition and subtraction calculations e.g. 145 + 36 = 181 can be checked by doing a subtraction 181 - 36 = 145. Have a look on this website if you're not sure. https://www.theschoolrun.com/inverse-operation
There is an interactive game here that you can have a go at. https://kids.classroomsecrets.co.uk/resource/year-3-check-answers-interactive-animation/
https://kids.classroomsecrets.co.uk/resource/year-4-checking-strategies-interactive-animation/
Generate your own calculations adding two 4 digit numbers (you could roll a dice 4 times to make the number or use a number generator (Google has one). Add the numbers together and then check the answer by subtracting. Then have a go at subtraction calculations and check the answers using addition.
Stay safe x

11 June 2020
Hello year 4, I hope you are all OK. It would be great to hear from you, what have you all been doing over the last few weeks.
Here is some science to have a look at. Find out what vertebrates are and what invertebrates are. Watch the videos to find out more.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zn22pv4/articles/zp6g7p3
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zn22pv4/articles/z8mbqhv
There are some ideas for things to do on this website.
https://www.zsl.org/sites/default/files/KS2%20-%20Activity%20at%20School%20-%20Classification%20of%20Invertebrates.pdf
You could make a poster to explain what an invertebrate is and what an invertebrate is.
You could make a mobile with an animal from each vertebrate group (mammals, fish, birds, reptiles, amphibians) hanging on it.
Find out how many different groups of invertebrates there are.
Have a bug hunt in your garden! Find out what type of invertebrate you have found.
Remember to email photographs of your work so we can put it on the website.

Hello year 4
Maths this week is looking again at chunking for division. Here is a reminder of how to do chunking. Write the shopping list, take away chunks of 4, total how many chunks of 4 you took away to get the answer.
143 ÷ 4 = 35 r 3
143 Shopping List
- 40 (10 x 4) 1 x 4 = 4
103 2 x 4 = 8
- 40 (10 x 4) 5 x 4 = 20
63 10 x 4 = 40
- 40 (10 x 4)
23
- 20 (5 x 4)
3
This website also explains chunking but please don't move onto bus stop method (the last method on the website)!
https://www.theschoolrun.com/what-is-chunking
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eF4h76R99_Q
There are some division questions and word problems here that you can solve by chunking in your maths books.
Any problems send me a message on here.

Mrs Firminger
14 June 2020
I’ve just noticed that the post about chunking hasn’t separated the shopping list from the calculation. I’ve typed the shopping list below, if you remove that from the calculation it should make more sense!
Shopping list
1 x 4 = 4
2 x 4 = 8
5 x 4 = 20
10 x 4 = 40

Hi Year 4
Hope you are all OK.
This weeks maths is all about decimals :0) I'd like you to have a go at rounding decimals to the nearest whole number. Here's how you do it:
1. Look at the tenths digit (the number after the decimal point)
2. If it is less than 5 then round the number down by removing the decimal part of the number
3. If it is 5 or more then round the number up by adding one on to the ones digit and removing the decimal part of the number.
Examples
3.8 rounds up to 4 because the tenths digit is an 8.
6.29 rounds down to 6 because the tenths digit is a 2.
There are some worksheets on these sites that you could print off or work from your tablet into your maths book.
http://www.snappymaths.com/counting/rounding/rounding.htm
https://www.math-salamanders.com/rounding-decimals.html#:~:text=Rounding%20to%20the%20nearest%20whole%20number&text=Look%20at%20the%20tenths%20digit,decimal%20part%20of%20the%20number.
There are some games on these sites that you could play to practice rounding decimals to the nearest whole number.

Annabel - no sign of a cupcake yet!!
For maths this week I would like you to have a go at solving problems involving money and measures. Here are some to solve in your maths book.
1. The ‘Mix and Match’ sweet selection in the supermarket cost 42
pence per 100g. How much will 600g of sweets cost you?
